Overweight Man Fears for His Health, Asking for Community Help

A 23-year-old Livermore man is battling weight problems and is seeking help.

We received this YouTube video from several readers. Is there anything we, the Livermore community, can do to help this young man?

Patch readers say the man's name is Robert Gibbs and lives in town. If you have his contact information please e-mail me at kristofer.noceda@patch.com.

Let us know any ideas you have on how to help this man in the comments section below and we'll see what we can do on our end. Thanks.

@ George Fay This is my brother and I personally know how hard it has been growing up, He didn't do this to himself it is what his body has done to him. Just as your hurtful words and negativity are something that you do but we have to read them. I mean haven't ever heard if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all instead of having closed ears to him ask for help why don't you listen to him no where did he ask for money to pay for anything enough with your closed mind I want to thank everyone else for your help and listening to him. He is an amazing man and yes he is my little brother I am so proud of him. Thank you all so much

I've received several e-mails about this too and will try and get more information. It may be the back end of the system removing comments when other readers flag it as inappropriate. Usually when a Patch admin/editor removes a comment not in line with our terms of use (http://livermore.patch.com/terms) we give you a heads up on why. Thanks

There is a man who was in the San Ramon Weight Watchers group who has had an amazing weight loss journey (over 350 pounds) under the support of that particular leader and others. I suggest contacting her, her name is Maryann B. and she could probably let you know where to start. She has been there every step of the way for this other young man. 925-244-1760 Here is a link to Steven's success story video http://youtu.be/sONkc4_Aofo

Hi Tanya I went to Almond Avenue and after school.I remember like it as yesterday when he transferred over in.the middle of the year and was playing dodgeball out front of the bathrooms. care with him and agree he is one of the sweetest guys ever. I messaged my friend about what I knew about him, I wont share that on here. My mother and I were scared for him then and frankly stated I'm not in great shock at his condition. In an attempt to be of help and not of criticism at all, I highly reccommend that whoever does find him treatment sternfully address his caretakers and understand fully his past and current family dynamic and background. I imagine he may remember me, I would always say hello as I know how it feels to be ostercized I was also a chubby kid who went to afterschool at a school with pretty narrow-minded people to put it lightly. I would think he'd remember me especially since I was one of only maybe 5 African American students there. Because I've lost all of my chilhood weight and remember him clearly this news does catch my attention and I do feel obliged to help where I can.

Best of luck to your brother! What a brave young man. Don't waste your time on the ignorant, unhappy people out there! Your brother has taken this amazing first step and as you can tell from all the other comments, there are many people out there that support and believe in him. I can't wait to hear about his success!!
Mel March 03, 2012 at 04:55 PM
I'm so happy to see there are so many people trying to help. To change your whole lifestyle completely and loose weight and keep it off are very difficult things. Close to 90% of ppl that loose will always gain it back; it is a daily committment that one has to ardently be dedicated to. The journey will require time and effort but I know he can do it- its the most rewarding work a person can do- even over making money! May God bless you Robert and family, I will pray for you.

What a brave person he is. I honestly think that must have been the bravest thing I have seen. I may not be able to help but I do want to commend him for being so brave. I wish him the best of luck in getting real lifelong help, counseling and exersize he can!

JS, THAT is a wonderful you-tube testimony from Steven! Very inspiring. Thank you for sharing. Robert, I will be praying for you! You can do it with help! Tanya, He was brave enough to take the first step, I pray you can help Robert follow up with all of these leads and let his heart choose the direction to go. Keep up the momentum!

Tanya, What your brother has done is a brave thing to share his problems with the world. Fortunately the majority of the people are very supportive but there are going to be a lot of negative, nasty comments out there too just because there are a lot of negative people out there. I know it if hard but when you are reading the comments, try to just skip over the negative ones. Your brother has a long road ahead of him but it sounds like he is headed it the right direction. He will need all the positive support around him he can get. He is lucky to have a sister like you looking out for him. Best wishes to you and family.

Robert, that was a very brave thing that you did, posting that video asking for help. You've made the right first step. Hang in there and get the help that you need, however it may come to you. Maybe we'll see you on Biggest Loser! I'll be pulling for you! By the way, Happy Birthday, and I wish you many more happy birthdays to come.

vicki March 04, 2012 at 12:42 AM
My thoughts exactly Paul! I have a good feeling that his next birthday will be quite different than this year's. Besides thinking good thoughts and praying for him, what can we do to help this sweet guy out? My son also went to school w/him and says he has a nice family and is an awesome guy w/many friends. To Robert: It's going to be ok. Good things come to those who wait. We are all on your side and will be here rooting for you ALL THE WAY. Tanya: We live here in town too. Please tell us how else we can help.

Jordan Weaver March 04, 2012 at 04:51 AM
Robert you can make a change in your life and you have taken that first step by asking for help and recognizing you have a problem. Know that there are others that suffer the same pain as you do even after the weight is lost........hunger that cannot be satisfied and an emptiness that cannot be filled. There is HOPE and there is HELP! Hang on & have faith that there is someone who cares! My son lost over 200 lbs from age 15 to 17 but still carries the emotional weight of a thousand unkind words and sheds tears for you as a brother sharing the same burden-I will be here for you and my son as well if you want to contact us- Facebook -Jordan Weaver Las Vegas NV- Peace & love to you Robert!
Jordan Weaver March 04, 2012 at 05:34 AM
I have a son named Jordan, his birthday is February 15th, the same as Roberts nephew.Jordan just turned 18 and has went from weighing 430lb in 2009 to 230 2/2012!He changed his eating habits by high protein high fiber diet/ small meals 6+ times a day w/exercise (also a former XBox junkie) Jordan went back to school this year after I took him out of public school because of the teasing and bullying/not to mention the fact that the school did not have a desk/chair to accomodate him. We are still having trials and tribulations even as Jordan has lost all of that weight, he still bears not only physical scars but emotional scars as well. Jordan attempted suicide on January 20, 2012. He was fortunately not successful, but was in a hospital until his release on March 1, 2012. Im hoping with a lot of love Jordan can accept the great person he is &how all he has accomplished can be inspirational to others like your brother. I know that Robert can lose the weight,&weight loss surgery is an option, but not always necessary as my son has proven. What is necessary is support and love. Remember ! The best way to deal with the problem is to have someone to talk to. I would love it if Robert corresponded with my son, as they are both young handsome men with their whole lives in front of them, with a lot of the same problems. My son thinks no one understands what he is going through, but I think there is someone who does Thx!-Jordan Weaver Las Vegas NV - facebook-em -lasvegasjo8@aol.com

My heart was breaking as I read your story. I feel as one of the most blessed people in the world. I get to help people change their lives from depression, no hope, exhaustion and often time no self worth to living HAPPY, ENERGETIC, MOTIVATED PEOPLE HAVE LOVING LIVES. For most people feeling this way, it seems practically impossible to change their life, BUT I PROMISE TO YOU, IT IS POSSIBLE, & FASTER THAN YOU THINK I'm here to help get to where you want to be. Not only do I have a Master's degree in Nutrition, a Registered Dietitian, and Personal Trainer but also have work experience with people that have mental difficulties when it comes to food. Its all habit. Individuals like this cannot do a "general" diet/exercise program. IT MUST BE TAILORED TO YOU, Theres no other person in the US thats a registered dieitian and personal trainer in one. I worked for websites that I was the exercise specialist and nutritionist for websites such as Jillian Michaels, Susanne Somers, Joy Baeur, and many other well know fitness and nutrition health gurus, and I am the next one. So if your serious, let me know. I am from South Florida but in LA right now doing exactly what you need me to do, I am revamping a man's life to start eat healthy, have his kids eating healthy, and developing an exercise program appropriate for him right now. I have one week left on this project and would love to bless you change as I know you want to me. The cyce stops here, call me now!!! 305-924-7319

Hi Robert, I left a message earlier but it didn't appear so I'm leaving you another one. I am from Livermore orginally and still live pretty close by. I have some information that may help you. www.pureorganic.awarenesslife.com I know it doesn't seem much to you but I lost 40 lbs using these products. The cast from Dancing With The Stars and a well known coach from The Biggest Loser are currently using these awesome products. This isn't the magic bullet you need, but it's pretty darn close! You need specialized help and constant supervision like you would see on The Biggest Loser. Please go to my website or call me for further info. and I can at least help you get started. My heart goes out to you and I will continue to pray you get all the help you need. 209-613-6767

Robert, you are a handsome man. What beautiful eyes! I don't have expertise to help, but I'm hopeful your video reaches someone who does. Don't give up. This is the first day of the rest of your life. Loving thoughts headed your way.

@ Anonymous - I thought the same thing about his eyes. His eyelashes are so long!
kathy schoppmeyer March 06, 2012 at 11:37 PM
i just hope robert does well with whatever hope he gets-i'm sure this has to be something that will need pyschological counseling to go with the weight loss.instead of using drugs or alcohol to numb the pain he has the food for comfort-believe me i know the pain
