Memorial Day Travelers Hitting The Road

An estimated 4.2 million Californians will travel this holiday weekend.

People who travel this Memorial Day weekend will have plenty of company.

The California State Automobile Association estimates 4.2 million Californians will travel more than 50 miles this weekend.

That is a 0.2 percent increase over last year.

Of those Californians who travel, 3.5 million are expected to drive. That's 0.4 percent fewer than a year ago.

And 460,000 will fly, 11 percent more than last year. That's despite the fact that air fares nationwide are 14 percent higher than a year ago.

Almost 200,000 will travel by rail, bus, watercraft or other modes, a 12 percent decrease from last year.

The average hotel rate at CSAA Three Diamond lodgings is $148 per night.

Gas prices also are higher than a year ago. The average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $4.08. That's 10 cents less than a week ago, but a dollar higher than on Memorial Day 2010.
