Everyone will turn their clocks back one hour on Sunday at 2 a.m.
for the end of daylight saving time.
With that extra hour of sleep Sunday, public safety officials are urging Bay Area residents to check smoke detectors and change batteries on the devices.
While changing clocks, fire officials suggest changing the battery on all smoke detectors to keep up with fire safety at home.
Fire officials from the San Jose Fire Department said that although Sunday provides a good time for an annual battery change, residents should be testing smoke alarms monthly.
Fire officials emphasized that a working smoke alarm helps make sure families have the best chance of survival if a fire breaks out.
When we noticed that it was getting dark before 7:00pm in Daylight Time, it should have been time to change the clocks back to Standard Time. Prolonging the inevitable was just plain stupid! And as a result, we all probably used more electricity and augmented PG&E's income just a little more as we were turning on the lights earlier and earlier in Daylight Time as the sun was setting just after 6:00pm. For those of us on the far west end of Pacific Time, especially at latitudes above the 30th Parallel, it doesn't make sense to remain in Daylight Time past the second week in October, any more than it makes sense to switch over to Daylight Time from Standard Time earlier than the last week in March.
