Update: Altamont Pass Fire Now 90 Percent Contained

Blaze scorched 400 acres near the junction of Interstate 580 and Interstate 5.

Firefighters have gotten control of a 400-acre grass and brush fire in the Altamont Pass, a Cal Fire spokesman said.

The fire was reported about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Interstate Highway 580 and Chrisman Road, just south of Tracy near where I-580 and Interstate Highway 5 come together, Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said.

Wind coupled with dry conditions fueled the the fire, he said.
The fire was 90 percent contained as of 7:30 p.m.

The blaze was started when a vehicle caught fire and the flames spread to nearby dry grass, according to Berlant.

The fire initially threatened some homes, but those structures are no longer in danger, Berlant said.
