The popular restaurant in Livermore is closed

The Rockhouse Sports Pub and Grill has closed. The restaurant on Portola Avenue, after being purchased by Billy Jordan.

Billy Jordan from Rockhouse wrote:

"We are closed sorry. It takes $3,200 a day to run, and we averaged $1,700 a day. Bottom line I got out before my debt reached $100,000. I tried."

Jordan said the restaurant closed on Dec. 23.

According to their website, the sports-themed restaurant had been in Livermore since 2003.

It is sad to see the rockhouse close...This was a home away from home for plenty of us that would enjoy going there daily for a cold beer and some good food...Billy did his best and all of there staff was tremendous...I wish nothing but the best for them in there future....

I'm amazed they lasted this long. It's been a while since any of the employees there could cash their paychecks.....

I don't want to start any rumors, but I heard through a reliable source it was shut down because of gang fights inside the bar. The last time I was there which was late Sept. There was at least 15 low lifes that must have slithered there from Paseo Laguna Seco which is on the scanner daily. Its a nice close place for them to hang out.

I used to play in a band there in the 90's called the mix. Then rodeo weekend that place was cowboy crazy. Those were the days before Livermore changed and the economy was so good.I hope we all see better days ahead,we will have to wait and what the slave owners of us have in their diabolical plans for all us!God be with us in 2013!
Non ya January 03, 2013 at 03:01 AM
I went there all the time the waitresses where my friends that's ended up being the only reason why I went there food went to shit they sometimes didn't have a chef they charge you 11$ no matter what for a mix drink either in a big cup or small if billy or David where there u always got it in a little cup with barley any booze. Everyone who worked there checks bounced and the fact that they didn't even turn the giants play off game on because the crappy raiders where on you gotta be shitting me. I'm sad for my friends but billy should learn how to run a facility as well as actually come in see his co owner was robbing him blind and stop partying with his employes the place woulda had half a chance!

@scanner guy....any idea how to get LPD on scanner via computer or mobile device?
Sue January 03, 2013 at 05:06 AM
The food was horrible and the service was worse! Numerous times they over charged for salads at lunch. I wouldn't even begin to try dinner. Amazing it stayed in business as long as it did. This was within the past year and a half.

I have to admit, I agree. We really wanted this place to be good. We've been giving it "another chance" occasionally since 2002 when we moved in close to this area. We love a good steak, but sadly never had one here. The restaurant was always dead the times we went in there, even at 7 on a Friday night. Consistently good food at reasonable prices will always succeed in the restaurant biz - but this place had neither good food nor reasonable prices in our experience.

Billy did a great job and had a lot of passion for this place. Not sure why people are bashing his efforts with their uneducated opinions. As far as checks bouncing, it's too bad the staff couldn't keep that information internal, however, that is not any of you commenters place to share that. This is sad news and a lot of people are out of jobs. Lets try to be encouraging and keep your judgements and snide remarks to yourself.

Ya I worked at rock house and billy Jordan left more then 30 employees with 2 1/2 months with no pay he wrote us bad checks and checks we can't cash cuz his bad rep no one in Livermore will cash is checks then on Christmas he locked the doors and never told the employees anything so when we showed up to work it was locked merry Christmas to us he left hard working familiar homeless hungry and without jobs I have kids I had no money for crossroad or rent this is wrong his so he can write bad checks everyware then Lough at us tell us he is filling bankrupt so we can't do anything who can we talk to to get help anyone???
Scanner guy January 03, 2013 at 08:21 PM
@ Caroline, the only way to hear LPD now is to have a digital scanner, they switched over to digital in Aug. Thats why you can't hear it on radioreference.com anymore. if you go to that site you can hear broadcasts from all over the USA. oakland is always non stop, which makes Livermore sound like Mayberry!

It's a shame - we enjoyed the Rock Hose for years. My wife and I were there just about every Sunday morning during football season. Despite some of the negative comments, Billy really did make a go of it. The staff was awesome. The kitchen was up and down, but in a weird way, it was part of the "personality" of the place. Best of luck to Bill, Jessica, Dave, Gil, Amanda, Tawny, Megan, Kristina, Katrina, Riccardo and the gang. We'll miss you and we'll certainly miss Gil's extra Spicy Bloody Marys. Thanks Bill for giving it a go!

I tried my best. There has been 3 owners since 2003 including myself, we all left $100000 or more in debt. There is a reason for that. I took a failing business and tried to make it work, I couldn't. Good luck to the next guy. As for the comments about bouncing checks, I paid the employees over the taxes and now I'm more screwed than any of them, I'm not laughing I'm losing my house over this endeavor. I never got paid just got debt. Not feeling sorry for myself and don't want anyone else too either, I just know I had the balls to try. My employees knew what was going on and the day the doors closed was decided that day since we we're outta food, beer, and most importantly money. I've let all my employees know what's going on. The landlord will not allow me to sell becuz she already has her plans for the place. We also don't sell any drinks for $11 if I did I might still be in business. Thank you to all my loyal customers. P.S. In the last 5 years there have only been 2 physical altercations and niether were gang related. Get your facts staight Billy

Billy,I never met you but I went to your restaurant a few times over the years.I am commenting because I wish all of you better times in the future.I am a working man at the end of my career and have raised three fine young men here in Livermore.I know how tricky and scary it can be trying to take care of people and succeed at your chosen venture so I say good luck and God bless us all! and you Billy.

Congrats to Billyfor attempting to achieve his American dream. I don't know Billy or anyone at the Rockhouse it small businesses are what keeps America running. For the people complaining I'd ventures guess that you've never run a business or had a job with any real responsibility. You'll work paycheck to paycheck your entire life and "retire" when the doctor calls out your time of death.

I'm curious - how is it that the Rock House can't stay in business while the Castle Rock next door seems to be surviving, even though it appears virtually empty of diners most of the time?
BILLY JORDAN January 07, 2013 at 07:07 AM
The wealthy Rockhouse landlord owns both buildings(both paid off) and the Castle Rock is her restaurant.

I have a groupon and I went to eat there and found it closed. It was to expire on 12/31/12. Anita, the landlady was outside and she said to come see her after the place opens back up and it will be honored. Georgia Angelos...I bet Anita will honor your gift card, as well. Just talk to her, you can find her in the adjacent gift shop a lot of the time. She said she is hoping to have it back open in a month. We shall see...As for Billy Jordan...I think he really tried to make this a better place. He took it over and changed the menu, got some good cooks and remodeled to make it a nice place. I didn't like the place before...the food was no so hot, but in the last year, I decided to give it a try and, I have been impressed and more than happy to spend my money on the food from his new menu. I will miss your zucchini sticks. Sorry to see you close. God bless everyone who has been financially affected by this closing.
Patrick January 07, 2013 at 09:15 PM
Sorry to hear about the closing Billy, You ran a great, fun place and all of your employees were the best. I'm sure everyone will land great jobs in other places around town. All the best to you and yours. I hope you recover from this brave endeavor quickly. Patrick

Dear Billy Jordan--I want to thank you for all your honest efforts in reopening the Rock House. I patronized your business on several occasions, you and your staff were always very professional. The food was excellent, the drinks were great, and I loved the atmosphere! Today, businesses are closing by the thousands all over the country. I will miss you, and the Rock House will never be the same for me. Good luck to a very special person! M.J. Stanley

Billy, So sorry buddy! Kurt and I were so hoping it would work out but we all know how much it cost to run a business and how much your rent must be! You know I was there all the time, could have been an employee. I will miss you and all I became friends with that worked there! And hangin out of course. Yup you gave it a shot and I appreciate it! Take care my friend! Hope to see you around town! <3 Becka and Kurt

Ah...I didn't know Anita owned and operated the Castle Rock. I thought her ownership ended at the Rockhouse and the gift shop (another business that I never see anyone patronizing). That explains a few things. Wonder why she doesn't operate the Rockhouse too?
Bullet Bob February 11, 2013 at 09:47 PM
The Rockhouse has been going strong for a lot longer than 50 yrs. I used to frequent the place when I was a young skydiver in 1963. It was a classy dinner house owned by a real gentleman named Darrell Smith who used to allow the jumpers to congregate in his back room. Thanks from The Bullet D714
