Update: Crews Contain 50-Acre Brush Fire on Eastbound I-580

By Bay City News

Firefighters have contained a 50-acre brush fire that was sparked by a car fire on Interstate Highway 580 in the Altamont Pass area this morning, a Cal Fire spokesman said.

The fire was reported on eastbound I-580 near Grant Line Road at about 9:50 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said the flames spread quickly up a hillside along the highway. He said no structures burned and no injuries were reported.

"That's a pretty rural area in the Altamont Pass," he said.

The No. 4 eastbound lane was shut down because of the fire.

About half an hour after the car fire was reported, a crash occurred that left a car overturned in the highway's eastbound lanes near North Flynn Road.

CHP Officer James Evans said the car was on its roof and four lanes were blocked. He did not yet know if there were any injuries.

Here are some pictures a Patch reader sent of the roadside blaze, which looked to be threatening the hillside.
