My daughter and I are supper shoppers! We will be at the grandopening six more days!
jt November 2, 2012 at 03:38 pm
Only time will tell what the economic impact of the new outlet stores will be on existing business in Livermore.
Mike S November 2, 2012 at 08:47 pm
The good thing is that it will be easier to get downtown than to get to the outlets.
Californicated1 November 2, 2012 at 08:49 pm
I doubt it will have any for Livermore considering where it is in relation to the rest of the city.
From the rest of Livermore, there are only two ways to get there-- 1.) I-580; 2.) The new stretch of Jack London that just opened up. I drove it yesterday afternoon and there is a whole lot of nothing in between that shopping center and the rest of town, especially with the airport and the sewage treatment plant nearby. Whoever did the market studies for that shopping center probably did not count on much traffic coming in from the rest of Livermore, but more from Dublin and perhaps Pleasanton, which are closer to the shopping center than the rest of Livermore is. All the other areas where the folks of Livermore shop are within easy reach of the rest of the town, be it on First/Holmes, Vasco or Las Positas, with whatever is around Costco on the other side of the freeway for the people that live there. As for Paragon, once the Christmas shopping season is over, business at that shopping center will have to thrive on what comes off the freeway there at El Charro, because the rest of Livermore will still be doing their shopping at their familiar places.
Californicated1 November 2, 2012 at 09:38 pm
I do my supper shopping, as well as all the other meals I eat, over at Lucky or Safeway these days, depending on whether I hoofed it in or drove.
Marcie November 3, 2012 at 10:58 am
In some instances, I believe it could boost existing businesses. As director of Trinity Daycare Learning center, we are in a position to offer daycare to parents working at the new outlets. We are located only a few a few blocks off Jack London Blvd. Our close proximity makes us convenient for parents who want their children close by.
Mike Clark November 3, 2012 at 05:29 pm
You sure are entitled to your negative opinions, however the ones that can afford to shop and like something a bit more upscale than the mom and pop shops can offer will shop at Paragon. The only other large scale outlets are Gilroy, Vacaville, and SF, Milpitas does not count since they stuffed a home depot in the middle of the parking lot.
People will be coming from all over northern CA to shop the Livermore outlets, In no way was the investment made considering Livermore as the only ROI, why do you think it is constructed next to I-580 and not downtown? Consider the access I-580 and BART provide. "The median income of four out of the five Tri-Valley cities is more than double that of the United States as a whole. Only Livermore lags in terms of median income, but not by much. This is not surprising as the Tri-Valley cities possess higher levels of education than the national average." source: http://www.innovationtrivalley.org/portals/1/reports/trivalley_report_v8_Jul21_2010%20web.pdf Livermore wins on tax revenue, but looses on common sense to allow Dublin to annex the land on the other side of 580, similar to what happened with Ruby Hill being annexed to Pleasanton.
Californicated1 November 3, 2012 at 06:18 pm
@Mr. Clark,
I'm a peasant, meaning that there is NOTHING entitled about me, period! You may want this bunch of shops around and may be working to drum up business for what is out there. For all I know, it might be your job to do that and you must do what you may have agreed to do for that job and earn your pay. But at the same time, after looking at this site come up and seeing how the folks at the Livermore Chamber of Commerce and the folks in Pleasanton trying to get some development for Staples Ranch across the street on El Charro, and given the geographic isolation that this area has from the rest of Livermore, do you really think that this place will serve the people of Livermore any better than the shopping locations that are closer to where most of us live? From my perspective here on Junction Avenue, it would be much easier for me to walk to Wal-Mart and Kohl's and even Target and all those stores that surround them than it would be to pop into my car, expend gasoline and cause further wear-and-tear on my vehicle, or spend the money for a bus ride or cab fare, and get out to Paragon. Paragon is isolated from the rest of Livermore and might not get those customers and even the sales tax for the city coffers. And the residents of Dublin and Pleasanton might not like the prospect of paying sales tax to Livermore by shopping there, either. Only time tells what becomes of that development and whether or not those businesses thrive out there.
Californicated1 November 3, 2012 at 06:31 pm
And while we are on the subject of sales taxes and what goes into which city's coffers, there is the other problem out there because of our geography and that Tracy is 20 minutes away from Livermore and the Sales Tax in Tracy as well as the rest of San Joaquin County is by far less than it is here in eastern Alameda County.
So regardless of whether or not it may be more convenient to shop at Paragon, which to Livermore it is not, it would still be easier and even cheaper to go over Altamont Pass and shop in Tracy, which also has outlet shops and even a Best Buy like Dublin has, a mall like Pleasanton has and even many of the same stores that one sees in Livermore--all without the sales tax that the people in Livermore pay, so even if there are the same shops at Paragon as there are over on MacArthur and 205 in Tracy, the folks that can get there will be paying less in sales tax even if they have the same stuff for the same price at both locations. So if I choose to shop at an outlet center, it may be less expensive to me to drive over the hill 20 minutes and buy that stuff in Tracy because the sales tax out there is less than it is here in any of the Tri-Valley cities or anywhere else either in eastern Alameda or Contra Costa counties. So unless something detrimental happens out there to either Tracy or San Joaquin County, they might get more business out there because they have a lower sales tax.
david November 3, 2012 at 06:46 pm
Californicated1: I previously tried to take your comments seriously, but they are so inane I realize you offer them as comic relief. If you need a ride to Tracy to save a bit on sales tax let me know - one way of course!
Californicated1 November 3, 2012 at 06:50 pm
Got my own transportation, but thanks, anyway.
Tom Ness November 3, 2012 at 09:59 pm
Yeah, Californicated, obviously you don't realize the outlets are not target or Walmart. Our outlets when completed will be bigger then Fairfield and gilroy's outlet. People drive from long distances to reach those places. Tracy's outlet is not even an outlet, compared to the real deal. I won't be shopping at the outlet since most of it is higher end stuff I wouldn't waste money on, but great for livermore and our tax base. It's isolated cause it is huge, can you imagine this thing being in the actual city. With them expecting tens of thousands opening weekend, it would be a mess. Dublin or Pleasanton residents will shop regardless, that's like saying mot of us don't want to go to the mall cause Pleasanton will get the sales tax
Californicated1 November 4, 2012 at 12:11 am
Looks like the Tom Ness Monster has made another appearance.
Actually, when it comes to Sales Tax, I will consider that, because I watch my pennies. And when it comes to Pleasanton, I make it a point to spend as little time or money in that town, especially because I don't like its city government because of its restrictions on low-income housing which forces the rest of us around Pleasanton to deal with that. And I certainly will not drive in Pleasanton without a Fuzzbuster pinging away for anybody using a speed gun or any other detection equipment one uses in a speed trap. Add to that the questionable tactics that the Pleasanton Police Department employs this time of year, both at the Graham Hitch parking lot on the east side of town monitoring the traffic coming in through Stanley Boulevard/First Street, or at the California Pool shop over on Sunol Boulevard and Santa Rosa Avenue, where they do everything in the dark, no lights, no reflect tape. So when you have police departments out there using private property for means other than what the owners use that property for, then I have a problem with that, because it may be trespassing and unlawful conversion of that private property for starters. The only reason anybody in Law Enforcement should be on private property is if they were chasing down a criminal that was using that property or investigating a crime on that property. Other than that, they stay off the property unless invited.
Californicated1 November 4, 2012 at 12:12 am
As for Dublin, the main reason I shop there is for the Best Buy there, and that is only after I have done my research on the web and verified that the Best Buy in Tracy does not have the article I am seeking to purchase.
The reason, because in Dublin, you also pay the high sales tax and BART sales tax on top of that, just like the rest of Alameda County does. If one spends a few hundred bucks on things like digital cameras and TVs, it might not hurt to look at how much sales tax may be levied from one location to the next. And if one looks at the Sales Tax rates, Tracy's at 8.25% is less than 8.75% that Livermore has these days, or even the 9.25% that El Cerrito charges. That may not seem that much for the smaller dollar items, but if you are paying at least several hundred dollars for an item, the Sale Tax one levies where you buy the item is going to matter. You should always be mindful of what you pay for an item as well as be just as mindful of what you pay for sales tax. And for those of us who shop at Fry's Electronics, be mindful that even though you may find shopping at the one in Concord more convenient than the one closer to us in Fremont, but Concord at one time used to charge 9.25% sales tax over the 8.75% that was charged in Fremont.
Californicated1 November 4, 2012 at 12:14 am
And speaking of Fry's Electronics, too bad we are not closer to one in Roseville, where they still have a 6.25% sales tax.
So sometimes where you purchase your stuff does matter and you should be mindful even of the sales tax.
Fred Eiger November 4, 2012 at 07:58 pm
I'm excited. These are high quality stores and will attract shoppers from throughout Alameda and Contra Costa County. A big win for Livermore.
skybaby November 7, 2012 at 02:43 pm
sales tax in Roseville is not 6.25% its 7.25%....

A great issue! However, the rodeo is nothing but animal cruelty wrapped up as "tradition"Read More and "entertainment". Why would the animal's welfare become a concern now? Rodeo performers have been documented beating, kicking, and shocking normally docile cows and horses in chutes and holding pens. "Bucking broncos" and steers are provoked with electric prods, sharp sticks, caustic ointments, and the pinching "bucking" strap, which is what really makes them jump, they are not "wild" and "dangerous" . The cowboys earn points by spurring the bucking horse. I have seen them up close and many are bleeding. Calves, roped when running, have their necks snapped back by the lasso, often resulting in neck and back injuries, bruises, broken bones, and internal bleeding. After their short and painful "careers," animals in rodeos are sent to the slaughterhouse. Dr. C.G. Haber, a veterinarian who spent 30 years as a federal meat inspector, describes the animals discarded from rodeos for slaughter as being "so extensively bruised that the only areas in which the skin was attached [to the flesh] was the head, neck, leg, and belly. I have seen animals with six to eight ribs broken from the spine and, at times, puncturing the lungs. I have seen as much as 2 to 3 gallons of free blood accumulated under the detached skin." Every national animal protection organization opposes rodeos because of their inherent cruelty. Don't feel bad everyone, I used to love the rodeo too. Before I knew better...

Something to consider and not pushing it aside because I feel its unimportant, but what I'd love toRead More have access to is how the riders that were hurt are doing today. Two bull riders got gored, one in the back and he was down and out for a bit and then obviously not "okay" as he stumbled out of the arena and then another that got his leg hurt and he couldn't get himself over the gate on his own. Left saturday's Rodeo hoping they were okay and would love follow up if at all possible. Thanks!
