Livermore Outlets Grand Opening Sparks Huge Traffic Delays

Heavy traffic reported along Interstate 580 and areas near the new Livermore outlets shopping center.

The California Highway Patrol has issued a traffic alert along Interstate 580 as thousands of shoppers head to the new Livermore outlets.

The CHP alert says:

DUE TO THE OPENING OF THE NEW PARAGON OUTLET STORES, THERE ARE BIG DELAYS (OVER 40 MINUTES) ON 580 IN BOTH DIRECTIONS APPROACHING EL CHARRO RD...WB TRAFFIC IS BACKED UP TO VASCO ROAD...EB 580 SLOWS FROM HACIENDA DR...ALTERNATE ROUTE: ISABEL AVENUE TO JACK LONDON BLVD

Patch readers stuck in traffic report on our Facebook page that it took some folks two hours to get to the outlets center — from Pleasanton.

Other readers also reported seeing people parking at the Dublin Target across the freeway, and walking across the Fallon Road overpass to get to the Livermore outlets.

Some readers who were stuck in traffic decided to head back home.

Out of town shoppers are trying to spend a million dollars in Livermore today and every day this weekend. I am surprised that upsets you, that I suggested alternate routes for the shoppers to more easily spend their money in Livermore. Do all Livermore citizens share your attitude?

Thanks for the heads up, will check out the Outlets another day! Heading to Granada High School, in Livermore off Stanley and Wall Street. Their having a Harvest Boutique tonight! In support of "The Class of 2013 Safe & Sober Grad Night"! They have lot's of shopping, baked goodies, raffles, Savory food from the Food Truck Mafia and much more...!

Taking Stanley to El Charro??? Good luck with that!!! There's no way to do so. El Charro does not connect to Stanley as it's a private road through the quarry.
Terri M. November 8, 2012 at 10:14 pm
I used the new Jack London Blvd. from Isabel and got there in no time. Now the rest of the tri-valley can feel the pain Livermore citizens have ALWAYS had trying to get to Stoneridge Mall! :)
Michael Austin November 8, 2012 at 10:20 pm
I agree, Jack London Blvd. is the quickest route into the outlets. As Bob pointed out in an earlier comment, El Charro is partly private, which i did not realize with the map at the top of this comment colummn. Expand the map to find Jack London Blvd.

Don't have to worry about this unless you are doing something illegal.
Californicated1 November 9, 2012 at 03:19 am
Keep on believing that lie as long as you like.
But laws are made by people and interpreted by them, too, which makes them very flawed. It wasn't until recently that even homosexuality was outlawed and the local police in places like Texas were busting people they saw in acts as innocent as holding hands and kissing in public. And before then, it was also illegal for whites and non-white peoples to date and even marry, and police in Virginia used to bust them when they were caught showing affection in public. So whatever makes you feel safe and allows you to sleep at night. But we need to watch those that also watch over us and keep them on their toes and make sure that not only are they "minding their p's and q's" but the rest of the alphabet, too. Community policing also requires that we "police" the Police to make sure that they are treating everybody in their jurisdiction equally and fairly. If there is one person amongst us in this community that is being harassed by any official, even in a Police Officer's uniform, then that should be regarded that everybody in this community is not safe. Furthermore, we can not allow the Police to use private property for their own purposes, which in itself is not only trespassing, but may also be theft and unlawful conversion of property. The only time police should be on private property is if they are at the invitation of the owner or investigating a crime on that property, not to conduct "speed traps".
Californicated1 November 9, 2012 at 03:22 am
And when the hordes of commuters will discover that Jack London now goes to El Charro, you may find them even using all of Jack London and even Pine Street to "L" Street as their alternate to 580, and the folks on Pine may not like having their two-lane residential street with only stopsigns as traffic control as a major commuter thoroughfare.

Pleasanton needs to review the Stoneridge road opening as gridlock will spread through Pleasanton. I lived in NY for several years, a few miles from the Woodbury Commons Outlets. You were stuck in traffic for 2 1/2 hours just trying to leave the outlet parking lot on weekends. Not a good thing.
Creed Erickson November 9, 2012 at 11:31 am
What exactly is the problem's cause? Were the fwy ramps under-designed? Is it a parking problem? Who to turn to for mitigation? CalTrans? City of Livermore? Certainly access via Stoneridge would relieve some of the pressure coming from the west, but that isn't the root problem, is it? This sounds like a hidden cost that the valley cannot afford and was not well considered in the design of the facility.
max November 9, 2012 at 12:29 pm
That has been in the general plan for many years. It made sense then, it makes more sense now.
J Jay November 9, 2012 at 01:01 pm
I think I'll wait another week to check it out. By the way Stanley is a mess due to construction.
Trevor Tooze November 9, 2012 at 01:12 pm
I have never understood, why people, when something new comes out, product or grand opening, they have to have it, or be thereright now. The out;lets are not going anywhere for a very long time.
Californicated1 November 9, 2012 at 03:00 pm
For years, Pleasanton has been more than aware of its traffic issues and has taken somewhat of a schizophrenic approach to their issues.
Much of the problem lies with the configuration of Stanley/First/Sunol Boulevard and that while commuters still insist on taking First between Stanley and Sunol Boulevard, the Pleasanton Police Department has their District 3 officers using the route as a "revenue corridor", with speed traps at and near Graham-Hitch or at that abandoned stand across the street after it becomes Stanley Boulevard. There is another trap at the park by the Seniors Center at the corner of Bernal and Sunol Boulevard and then another around Santa Rosa and Sunol, with the PPD using both the Raley's parking lot and the California Pool parking lot and alley behind the building as their perch, especially when it is dark before 7:00am. Valley/Bernal as alternates leave much to be desired. Bernal is two lane south of Stanley and Sunol Boulevard and like First is going through a residential area. Valley is fine until Santa Rita, and then goes two-lane through a residential area until you hit Bernal on the west side, and then you have the expanded Bernal from Sunol Boulevard to I-680. Stoneridge, on the other hand, is a 4-lane+ street from Santa Rita all the way to Foothill and is 40 mph through much of that. Stoneridge east of Santa Rita is a two-lane road going through a residential area, which is not good for commuting through.

Michael...what about people that live in Pleasanton and Dublin trying to get home who's city gets nothing but hell traffic from this shopping monstroucity.
Styler November 9, 2012 at 04:02 pm
People are acting like this traffic is going to be an every day occurence. It's grand opening weekend people, there are going to be a lot of people checking it out, a lot of events, the traffic isn't going to be like this every day. This is an amazing addition to Livermore and I am sure those people complaining will be visiting the outlets at some point too. Finally a decent place to shop, I avoid Stoneridge Mall at all costs.
Styler November 9, 2012 at 04:04 pm
Because some people like to be a part of the experience, especially those that had a hand in making it happen. I wanted to go yesterday and I am glad I did. Absolute positive vibes everywhere, it was an amazing experience. I can't wait to go back this weekend.
Darwinian Justice November 9, 2012 at 04:31 pm
Now you know how it feels, Pleasanton. You've been shucking all that crap traffic on Livermore for years, so drink your candy-assed lattes and shut up.
MTOL November 9, 2012 at 10:04 pm
Can't help but worry about whether travelling west on 580 from Livermore will ever be easy (on the weekends) again.
Mike S November 10, 2012 at 05:40 pm
It is sick to see the lack of traffic oversight at the outlet shopping center. The planners had direct knowledge of the nightmare. There is complete disregard for the highway system and those utilizing it through the Livermore Valley. On Friday at 11:00 AM the outlet traffic was backed up almost 1/2 on the freeway (East), 1/4 mile on the freeway (West) and the cars were lined up on the El Charro Rd. overpass further than I could see.
I'd think they would have pulled their heads out of the sand and done a better job with entry points including dedicated turn/access lanes from the freeways. I can't wait for the outlet mall to flop once the newness wears off. Once people understand they are purchasing Walmart quality products at Macy's prices the traffic will subside.
Tom Ness November 10, 2012 at 06:45 pm
There does need to be northern one off ramp both directions in that location, but that is the freeway, state, Caltrans, nothing to do with the outlet. Once off the freeway, chp and livermore police did a gret job with traffic and it all flowed well, the outlet is beautiful and is going to be a success. The nasty gilroy and Fairfield outlets are a success and you have to drive a long ways to reach those. It is going to be nice to have those outlets in our backyard. It's opening weekend, probably 100,000 people over this weekend, relax it will get better.
Tom Ness November 10, 2012 at 06:46 pm
More then one off ramp, not northern.

You mean as soon as all the GPS maps update to the fact that Jack London is open and start routing cars through the Livermore Ave/Portola/L/Pine/Jack London corridor during rush hour? Traffic hasn't been bad - yet. But look at what happened to Portola Avenue/N. Canyons Pkwy corridor! Stacked up with cars trying to bypass the congestion on 580. It took my wife 45 minutes to drive the stretch of 580 from Portola to El Charro Saturday morning! It's a good thing she left early for her luncheon.
I guess we'll see on Monday if it's just because of the grand opening sales or whether we are in for an extended cut off from Pleasanton/Dublin/all points west during mall hours. Right now if you want to go to Pleasanton it's actually twice as fast to head over 84 and come back up 680!
Jim Chu November 11, 2012 at 10:28 am
It's also because of the sales. Right now, stores are doing giveaways, raffles, 10-40% offs, BOGOs and more.
Jim Chu November 11, 2012 at 10:35 am
So I went to the Mall Saturday evening for the Sunset Sip and Shop event. Took W. Jack London and it only took about 15 minutes to get there. That's when I made a horrible mistake and thought both entrances to the mall parking lot where open - HAH! The LPD had the other entrance closed, a fact not revealed until I got to the closed entrance, and I had no choice but to get back on the freeway and loop all the way around again!
Hey LPD, when you close one of two entrances to a brand new mall during its grand opening, it would be nice if you put up a simple sign that says "ONLY ENTRANCE TO THE MALL" at the only entrance to the mall parking lot. And I wasn't the only one to get suckered. While I was waiting in line to register for the event, there were not one, not two, but THREE other parties that had also taken the 'round the airport tour! I gotta hand it to the crew in the parking lot though - a very efficient operation. Once into the lot we were parked within minutes. Reminded me of concert parking.
Sandy November 11, 2012 at 12:17 pm
The traffic was ALREADY bad. What were the planners thinking? I'm actually sick about this. I sure hope that all this hype about the revenue this mall will bring to Livermore is worth it, and we see this influx of money actually do something .......
I just see more traffic in our future. Not just for Livermore folks, but for Pleasanton and Dublin as well. I don't know that this was thought out very well honestly. I want my quiet little city back already. I'm not a mall fan. But Stoneridge was working just fine for me. So to me, this just sucks.
Marie November 14, 2012 at 02:34 pm
Honestly I think the outlets are more than Livermore needs. Some of the stores are reasonable stores and some are really not Livermore style. We don't need fancy high end stores like SF. @Styler you sound like a stuck up snob that shops all the time. The traffic is bad because of the outlets and I don't see that the traffic will improve anytime soon. I have mixed feeling about this outlet.

A great issue! However, the rodeo is nothing but animal cruelty wrapped up as "tradition"Read More and "entertainment". Why would the animal's welfare become a concern now? Rodeo performers have been documented beating, kicking, and shocking normally docile cows and horses in chutes and holding pens. "Bucking broncos" and steers are provoked with electric prods, sharp sticks, caustic ointments, and the pinching "bucking" strap, which is what really makes them jump, they are not "wild" and "dangerous" . The cowboys earn points by spurring the bucking horse. I have seen them up close and many are bleeding. Calves, roped when running, have their necks snapped back by the lasso, often resulting in neck and back injuries, bruises, broken bones, and internal bleeding. After their short and painful "careers," animals in rodeos are sent to the slaughterhouse. Dr. C.G. Haber, a veterinarian who spent 30 years as a federal meat inspector, describes the animals discarded from rodeos for slaughter as being "so extensively bruised that the only areas in which the skin was attached [to the flesh] was the head, neck, leg, and belly. I have seen animals with six to eight ribs broken from the spine and, at times, puncturing the lungs. I have seen as much as 2 to 3 gallons of free blood accumulated under the detached skin." Every national animal protection organization opposes rodeos because of their inherent cruelty. Don't feel bad everyone, I used to love the rodeo too. Before I knew better...

Something to consider and not pushing it aside because I feel its unimportant, but what I'd love toRead More have access to is how the riders that were hurt are doing today. Two bull riders got gored, one in the back and he was down and out for a bit and then obviously not "okay" as he stumbled out of the arena and then another that got his leg hurt and he couldn't get himself over the gate on his own. Left saturday's Rodeo hoping they were okay and would love follow up if at all possible. Thanks!

It would be nice to know, indeed. When my husband called to report the outage the recording saidRead More there were no outages in our area, which was clearly incorrect.

I got the same thing, no outages when I called. I requested to be contacted by PG&E to explainRead More the problem. No call for that but I did get a "survey" call about their automated system. We have also lived here for 20+ years and never had this many outages.
