Pit Bull Killed, 6 Arrested in Connection to Monday's Shooting

Livermore police shot and killed the pit bull after it attacked them and a K9 dog, police say.

Livermore police arrested six people Wednesday in connection to shots being fired at a home on the 2700 block of Palm Avenue on Monday, according to Livermore police.

In the process of the investigation, officers shot and killed a pit bull that ran towards officers and attacked them and a K9 dog, police said.

In the investigation of Monday's shooting, officers tracked the trajectory of the gun shot to the apartment complex on the 900 block of South Livermore Avenue.

Officers entered the backyard of the property, when they encountered the pit bull. This is how Livermore police describe what happened next:

"When the officer entered the backyard, a large Pit Bull ran toward him. The officer attempted to retreat from the yard, but the dog ran directly at him. The officer defended himself from the dog by trying to kick at it with his foot. The dog then ran toward the opened gate.  Once outside the gate, the Pit Bull ran directly at a Livermore Police K9 officer and her K9.  The Pit Bull immediately attacked the K9 and bit its neck. The officer that was initially attacked ran to assist the K9 officer and her dog. He was able to grab the Pit Bull’s collar and attempted to drag him back into the backyard but the collar came off. The Pit Bull immediately attacked the K9 again by biting his back leg and then locked onto the K9’s neck, and would not let go. The officer had no choice but to shoot the Pit Bull who then died at the scene."

In an apartment in the complex, Livermore police found a .22 caliber rifle and .40 caliber handgun. Livermore police believe the .22 caliber rifle was used in the shooting Monday. Also in the apartment was evidence of methamphetamine and marijuana sales, Livermore police say.
