Patch Picks: Have Dinner on a Train, Hike a Trail

Spring is here and while an extended vacation might be out of the question, taking a one or two-day staycation might fit well within your budget.

Enjoy lunch, brunch or dinner aboard the Sacramento RiverTrain, 341 Industrial Way, Woodland. The area is about a 15-minute drive from Sacramento. Serving up a Murder Mystery Dinner beginning Saturday until Oct. 15, the lively show is presented aboard the train with dinner, enhanced seating, a bottle of champagne or wine, soda, coffee, and a rose for the ladies. Explore Yosemite in the winter. Take advantage of Yosemite’s Badger Pass Stay 'N Play Package through March 31. Have an enjoyable experience at Alcatraz Island and Angel Island State Park in the San Francisco Bay. Alcatraz, once home to some of America’s most notorious criminals, has a dark mystique, and a visit through Angel Island’s U.S. Immigration Grounds is a must. Take a self-guided tour of Hearst Castle, 750 Hearst Castle Road, in San Simeon.  Experience Hearst Castle as Mr. Hearst’s guests might have. Stroll the gardens, relax on one of the terraces and soak in the views.  To tour the interiors of the buildings, select one of the daily, nearly two-hour guided tours. Individual tickets range from $12 to $30. Plan ahead and reserve your ticket at 800-444-4445.

Spend a day at nearby Lake Chabot Regional Park, 17600 Lake Chabot Road, Castro Valley. The 315-acre lake is open for fishing and boating throughout the year; rental boats and tour boat rides are available at the marina. Lake Chabot offers more than 20 miles of hiking trails and picnic facilities. Tables with barbecue pits are located adjacent to the parking and marina area.
