Local Boy Scout Leaders Endorse Eagle Badge for Andresen

The decision, denied in October, will now be considered by national Boy Scout leaders.

Moraga Boy Scout Ryan Andresen has moved one step closer to getting his Eagle Scout badge, despite the fact that it was denied in October because Andresen is gay.

That denial, first reported on Lamorinda Patch, sparked a national controversy, landing Andresen and his mother on talk shows and national news. He also received support from local and national politicians, including U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and 32 California state legislators. Nearly 500,000 people have signed a petition calling for the Boy Scouts of America to grant Andresen his Eagle Scout badge and overturn the policy prohibiting gays from belonging to the Boy Scouts.

On Dec. 31, local scout leaders agreed to submit Andresen’s request to an Eagle Board of Review. They have recommended approval of the badge to the Mt. Diablo-Silverado Council, which is headquartered in Pleasant Hill; it next moves to consideration by the national Scout leaders.

“I’m just so incredibly happy for Ryan,” said his mother Karen Andresen. “He’s worked so hard for this honor, and as a mother, it means the world to me to know that our local Scouting community believes in him, too. Regardless of what the BSA’s National Advancement Team decides to do with his application, this victory makes it all worth it and gives me so much hope for the future of the organization.”

Let's hope that the National Scouts approves this. Otherwise I will no longer be supporting their sales.

It is very sad to see both companies and people stop supporting scouting. Every year the Scouting program donates over 11.9 Million (11,963,746) hours of service to the community. It not only teaches boys to have an appreciation for the outdoors but provides them with life skills and activities that lasts their entire life. Having no annual "fees" or "dues" Fundraising is the only way to provide for more than 2.8 million youths. I urge you to reconsider your choice of support of the program. All it will do is hurt the youth (future) of the world. -An Eagle Scout

The Boy Scouts bars homosexuals and atheists. Why would I support such an organization just because of what they do? That's exactly why major corporations, companies and every day people stopped funding the Boy Scouts, because of their discriminatory and exclusionary policies. Your excuses are petty.

Nick, I agree with you and the rationalization of some never rise to the level of justifying the overt discrimination that some feel is Biblical in origin. Boycott the BSA!

Teaching boys that discrimination is ok. - Reality I will reconsider my support when the BSA joins the rest of us in the twenty first century.
