Hayward Air Rally Awards Livermore Teen Scholarship for Air Academy Program

The 50th annual Air Rally will be conducted on July 24-27 leaving from Hayward.

The Hayward Air Rally, the longest continually-held proficiency flying event in North America, has selected seven teenagers to receive fully-paid scholarships including tuition and roundtrip airfare to the Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) Advanced Air Academy summer 2014 program.

In partnership with local chapters of the EAA, the Hayward Air Rally is pleased to announce the winners of the scholarships as:

  • Aidan Cameron-Smith of Livermore, CA, a freshman at Kolbe Academy High School
  • Richard Frewert, Jr. of Carson City, NV, a junior at Nevada Connections Academy
  • Enrique Trujillo of Wendover, UT, a sophomore at Wendover High School
  • Nathan Womack of Lander, WY, a sophomore at Lander Valley High School
  • Aspen Eatherton of Rapid City, SD, a junior at Stevens High School
  • Joshua Hoernemann of Granite Falls, MN, a sophomore at Yellow Medicine East High School
  • Eric Sabol of Sussex, WI, a senior at Hamilton High School.
"With the generous support of the City of Hayward, our industry partners and sponsors, and participating Rally pilots and crew, we are pleased to expand our scholarship program this year and offer this opportunity to these outstanding youth at each of the seven airports to be visited on the Rally," said Chris Verbil, Chair of the Hayward Air Rally Committee. "As part of our non-profit mission, it is important to help seed the next generation of aerospace industry professionals, aircraft pilots, and aviation enthusiasts."

The Air Academy is located in Oshkosh, WI and is an in-residence summer camp for students to develop and explore their interest in aviation. The Academy camps provide the foundation for a lifelong love of aviation as well as the opportunity to create friendships with fellow aviation enthusiasts.

“We appreciate the Hayward Air Rally’s ongoing support for the EAA Air Academy scholarship program, because it gives young people the opportunity to pursue and discover their own aviation dreams,” said Bob Campbell, EAA’s Director of Museum Education. “Having the rally finish in Oshkosh in 2014 is a notable way to‘complete the circle,’ so to speak, as rally participants can personally see the transformational experience they help bring to these young men and women.”

About the Hayward Air Rally: The annual Air Rally is staged by the Hayward Air Rally, Inc., a not-for profit California public benefit corporation and charitable organization with IRS 501(c3) status.

Originally conceived by the City of Hayward’s Mayor in 1964, the Air Rally’s primary charter is to enhance general aviation safety by encouraging aircraft pilots to stay proficient in basic flight and fuel management techniques.

The 50th annual Air Rally will be conducted on July 24-27, 2014, originating at the Hayward Executive Airport and continuing over a challenging and competitive route through seven states with an ultimate destination of EAA's AirVenture at Oshkosh Wittman Field.
