Great Escape: A Subterranean Playground in the Caverns

Visiting a few of the caves in Calaveras County make for a terrific weekend getaway.

Calaveras County is home to an extensive network of caverns, where natural beauty and fantastic adventure offer a spectacular experience for every age group. 

Hundreds of limestone caverns are accessible to those who know where they can be found or who join an expedition to journey into the dark unknown. 

Open to the public are the Moaning Caverns, 5350 Moaning Cave Road, Vallecito, which offers visitors a guided tour deep underground into a chamber large enough to hold the Statue of Liberty. The tour also provides an opportunity to rappel by rope or reserve a challenging adventure trip at Mercer Caverns, in the Sierra Foothills on Sheep Ranch Road, in the small town of Murphys.

The famous Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, 101 Frogtown Road, Angels Camp, will be held May 19-22. The fair theme is "Pirates of the Carrots and Beans." See Open Frog Jumping each day of the jubilee.  Call 209-736-2561 for more information about the fair and jubilee.

Visit the Calaveras County Museum, 30 North Main Street, San Andreas. Open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily, the museum gives visitors a glimpse of life in Calaveras during the days of Black Bart, California's infamous stage coach robber, who was jailed in Calaveras County.
