Boy Honored for Park District T-Shirt Design

Officials provide a recap of the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District's board meeting.

At its meeting Wednesday night, the Board of Directors for the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District congratulated Livermore student Ryan Blackmore for his award-winning Run for the Parks T-shirt design. The design was selected from more than 80 entries from Livermore youth.

President Steve Goodman and Division Manager Jim Carlson presented Ryan, a student in the PAL program at Christensen Middle School, with a plaque during the Board meeting, and he was congratulated by directors and staff.

The Board heard a presentation on the District’s youth programs and services, including ESS, preschool and PAL. LARPD programs reach 1,500 youth daily. Through grants and contracts, the District provides subsidized childcare for those who have a need. There are more than 125 staff members working at 21 locations in Livermore. The self-supporting program is funded through fees and grants.

Resident Don Meeker spoke to the Board about his volunteer work with LARPD. He is working on a project to take digital photographs of District scrapbooks with newspaper clippings dating back as far as February 1949. Meeker shared some interesting facts with the Board and gave an update on the project so far. Additional volunteers may be needed to index the photos. Also during the meeting, the Board approved a resolution to accept the construction of Trail Segments D and E-2 as complete. The segments, stretching 1.27 miles, run along Tesla Road to the west of Mines Road, then cross north at Mines Road into the vineyards to meet with Charlotte Way. LARPD is holding a Trail Opening Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, to celebrate these new trails.

Staff also informed the Board that the 2012 Sycamore Grove Calendar is nearly ready to go on sale. The calendar, which uses photos taken by LARPD Park Rangers, showcases the year-round beauty of the open space park. Calendars will be sold at the Robert Livermore Community Center, and information is available online at www.larpd.dst.ca.us.
