If you’re thinking about giving one of these questionable items to your mom, think again.
Mother’s Day is May 13 and we’re already overwhelmed with commercials suggesting that we aren’t good children or husbands if we don’t break the bank honoring the woman who reared us this Mother's Day. If you’ve watched TV lately, you may think infants need to cough up diamond rings for their mommies, or that daughters should pick up a new smart phone for their moms. It’s true that moms like to receive special attention on Mother’s Day, but not all moms are so materialistic. In fact, a pizza company did a survey recently that found that 96 percent of moms would be happy with a homemade gift from their kids (and one of their pizzas on the table). So if you have little ones at home, direct them to the craft aisle when shopping for a Mother’s …

A source at the production company tells Livermore Patch that filming for the next Star Trek movie is scheduled this week at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
A source at the production company has confirmed reports that scenes for the next Star Trek movie are scheduled to be filmed in town this week, according to Livermore Patch's Susan Young. Details are slim, but Young says her source confirmed reports that filming will be held at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The news is the latest move to bring high-end production to the Livermore Valley, which continues to build its reputation in the film industry. In April 2011, Nicole Kidman arrived in town to film scenes for the HBO movie “Hemingway & Gellhorn." View Young's previous column on Livermore Valley Chamber CEO and Livermore Valley Film Commissioner Dale Kaye for more information on how the area is fast becoming a Hollywood …
Controversial program continues to generate angst among homeowners.
PG&E wants to hear from you. If you don't want the SmartMeter they installed on the side of your house - and they've installed a lot of them - the company wants to hear from you before tomorrow. According to information on their website, May 1 is the company's deadline to opt out of the program. The SmartMeters have generated currents of controversy ever since PG&E began installing them without notifying residents. Homeowners have raised issues of radiation emissions and privacy. Leaving the SmartMeter program, and telling PG&E you want to have the older analog meter re-installed at your home, will cost you. A ruling by the California Public Utilities Commission three months ago allows PG&E to charge you $75 for the change, and charge you …

Livermore hotel to be featured Monday on Travel Channel's new television series, Hotel Impossible.
Livermore looks gorgeous in this Valentine to our town. The Travel Channel's new series, "Hotel Impossible," features The Purple Orchid Inn and affable new owners Derek and Rhiannon Eddy in the show airing at 10 p.m. Monday, April 30. The New York film crew and host and noted “hotel fixer” Anthony Melchiorri worked with Derek and Rhiannon Eddy to bring the hotel into its full glory. Even at its worst, the hotel/spa still looks like a gem. The crew spiffed up the spa and offered tips on getting those hotel rooms filled. The problems were largely cosmetic, and under the old owners, the Inn lost business because of poor service. The Eddys seem to be dedicated to changing that. They have moved to Livermore to raise their family, so they have a…
