The school board voted Tuesday to send layoff warnings for 28 full-time equivalent positions. The notices cover 15 positions in elementary schools and 13 at the middle and high school level -- that range from physical education to foreign languages to math and science -- said Assistant Superintendent Chris Van Schaack.

The decision was meant to comply with state law to issue the preliminary warnings by March 15 and were not due to the uncertainty of a November state tax measure backed by Governor Jerry Brown. Final layoff notices are issued in May.
