UPDATE: 7 Arrested in Gang-Related Incident

Intersection of Chestnut and P streets temporarily closed during police investigation.

Seven people were arrested Monday night on suspicion of trying to start a fight in public, police said.

Officers interviewed at the scene said the incident is .

An adult affiliated with the Norteno gang challenged six people who claim to be part of the Sureno gang, police said. The six were described by police as five juveniles and an adult.

The incident occurred about 7:32 p.m. near the Chestnut strip mall between North O and P streets.

At least six police units responded to the incident and temporarily closed the intersection of Chestnut and P streets, near McDonald's.

Police were looking into witness reports of a knife being displayed by a person wearing red.

While police interviewed witnesses on the Chestnut mall side, a man standing with a group of bystanders across the street yelled, "The snitch had a knife!"

Police have said that gang-related crime in town tends to come in spurts.

Monday's incident is the latest in a string of gang-related crimes to hit the north Livermore area in recent weeks:

On March 25, one man was arrested on . The man, who claimed to be affiliated with the Sureno gang, used a sock with a padlock in it during a gang-related attack, police said. The attack occurred on Elm Street at Adelle Street.

On March 19, a by a rival group on the 3800 block of Silver Oaks Way. His injuries were non-life threatening and he is expected to survive, officials said.

Police continue to investigate a on Chestnut and North I streets that injured two people on March 13. The injuries were not life threatening, police said.

On March 8, a 17-year-old boy was confronted by an unknown person and in the area of the March 13 shooting.

The teen was cut on his arm but did not suffer major injuries. He was uncooperative with police and officials continue to search for the suspect.
